What Is The Romanian Deadlift

Romanian Deadlift: Strengthen Your Glutes, Hamstrings, and Core

What is the Romanian Deadlift?

The Romanian deadlift (RDL) is a barbell or free weight exercise that isolates and strengthens the glutes, hamstrings, and core. It is a variation of the traditional deadlift, with the difference being that the RDL primarily targets the posterior chain (back of the body) rather than the entire body.

Benefits of the Romanian Deadlift

The Romanian deadlift offers several benefits:

  • Builds muscle in the glutes, hamstrings, and lower back
  • Strengthens the core and improves posture
  • Enhances athletic performance for activities like sprinting and jumping
  • Reduces the risk of lower back injuries

How to Do the Romanian Deadlift

Stand with your feet hip-width apart, holding a barbell with an overhand grip just outside your legs. Keep your back straight and your core engaged. Lower the weight towards your knees by bending your hips, while keeping your legs mostly straight. Pause when you feel a stretch in your hamstrings, then slowly return to the starting position. Repeat for desired repetitions.
